Santa Cruz, Bolivia – Residents of Santa Cruz are grappling with a surge in crime as numerous police stations across the city remain abandoned, leaving communities vulnerable. A recent report by Red Uno highlighted the alarming situation, showing deserted police modules, some of which have reportedly become hideouts for criminals. Community members, particularly in areas like Villa 1ro de Mayo, voiced their profound concern over the lack of police presence. "Where are the police?" one resident questioned, expressing frustration that even in emergencies, law enforcement is absent. Another resident stated, "When it's about robbery or thugs, they don't appear. They ask for money, and if you don't give it, they do nothing." CCTV footage featured in the report depicted various criminal acts, including assaults and robberies, underscoring the daily threats faced by citizens. With approximately 5,000 active police officers for over 3 million inhabitants in Santa Cruz, the current deployment appears insufficient to address the rising crime rate. Residents emphasized that they often have to confront criminals themselves, stating, "We will flog them and then hand them over to the police." The community is now demanding immediate intervention from authorities to reactivate these abandoned stations and ensure the safety and protection of their neighborhoods.
