SANTA CRUZ, Bolivia – A sophisticated scam has come to light in Santa Cruz, where an individual, posing as a recruiter for an oil company, defrauded at least seven individuals, including five delivery drivers and two micro-bus operators. The perpetrator lured victims with promises of well-paying jobs, instructing them to hand over their cell phones with unlocked mobile banking applications for a purported GPS installation. "He told us he would pay 250 per day, give us travel allowances, and other benefits," stated one of the victims, who preferred to remain anonymous. "He said we had to pick up a person, but we had to leave our phones here so they could install the GPS." Upon returning to the meeting point after attempting to pick up the supposed personnel, the victims discovered the scammer had vanished with their phones. "We left our phones, everything, with the corresponding PIN, and went to pick up the person, but there was no one there," the victim recounted. "When we returned to the interview house, the man was no longer there." Hours later, the victims successfully tracked one of the stolen devices, leading to the apprehension of the scammer in a residential area of Santa Cruz. However, not all stolen phones were recovered, and the perpetrator had already transferred significant sums from the victims' mobile banking accounts. Amounts ranging from 900 to 4,000 Bolivianos were stolen from several victims, with one individual losing approximately 50,000 Bolivianos that they had recently withdrawn. Police are investigating the full extent of the fraud and urging the public to exercise extreme caution regarding suspicious job offers.
