Congressman Maxwell Frost delivered a scathing critique of the Everglades Detention Center following his recent visit, detailing what he described as inhumane conditions. Speaking at a press conference, Frost recounted witnessing detainees in cages, some reportedly yelling for help, with one individual asserting, "I'm an American citizen." He highlighted severe sanitation issues, stating, "We saw humans being held in cages. 32 people per cage, three toilets in each cage for these 32 people. And their drinking water comes from the toilet." Frost also expressed frustration over being denied access to medical facilities, a decision he said officials attributed to HIPAA regulations, which he dismissed as "bullshit." He argued that taxpayer money should not be used for such facilities, especially when Florida faces pressing issues like homelessness and a housing crisis. "Every Floridian should be ashamed that our taxpayer money is being used to put people in these cages," Frost declared, asserting that immigrants are "the blood of this nation" and not a threat. He concluded by vowing to continue unannounced visits and advocating for immigrant rights, emphasizing that "the work is not done here."
