Washington D.C. - Representative Melanie Stansbury (D-NM) issued a strong critique of the ongoing government shutdown on Tuesday night, marking its 28th day. Speaking from the U.S. Capitol, Rep. Stansbury expressed deep concern over the impending cutoff of SNAP benefits for 42 million Americans by the end of the week, attributing the crisis to the administration's "choice" to withhold contingency funds. "They are choosing to cut off food assistance to millions of Americans because there is already a contingency fund that is sitting there for this purpose," Stansbury stated. "There are literally billions of dollars sitting in the federal government for the purpose of ensuring that 42 million Americans... can put food on the table this weekend." In response to the escalating crisis, Rep. Stansbury announced the introduction of the "SNAP Back Act." This legislation aims to mandate the federal government to immediately release SNAP and WIC funds, prevent any future lapses in funding for these critical programs during government shutdowns, and ensure that states and tribal communities are reimbursed for emergency food assistance actions. "We are using every tool that we have access to," she affirmed, highlighting efforts to prevent widespread food insecurity. Stansbury also criticized the lack of engagement from Republican leadership, noting, "Republicans did not show up for work again today. The House is closed yet again... Republican leadership doesn't have any plan whatsoever to bring the House back into session." She concluded by reassuring her constituents, "We are here fighting the fight here in the halls of Congress and I want all of you to know that we are here. We are fighting for you and we're gonna make sure that New Mexico and our people are okay."
