Athens, Greece - Σωκράτης Φάμελλος, President of the SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance (SYRIZA-PS) and Member of Parliament for B' Thessaloniki, today presented a comprehensive proposal aimed at alleviating the severe cost of living crisis impacting Greek households. Speaking from a local market, Φάμελλος underscored the urgency of the situation, stating, "The cost of living is bringing households to their knees." The SYRIZA-PS leader outlined key measures, including a one-year suspension of Value Added Tax (VAT) on essential goods such as food and medicines, as well as a reduction in the Special Consumption Tax (SCT) on fuels and heating oil. "This practically means that for products costing 100 euros, the consumer will pay 88 euros, and the remaining 12 euros will stay in their pocket for other purchases," Φάμελλος explained, emphasizing the direct benefit to consumers. He further asserted that this proposal is fully costed by the State General Accounting Office and is in line with a European Union directive. Φάμελλος strongly criticized Prime Minister Mitsotakis for rejecting these VAT reductions, questioning the government's rationale. "There is no justification for Mr. Mitsotakis, who refuses the VAT reduction," he declared. "Since the measure is not beneficial, why did he vote for the same provision for a few islands? Let him answer us. He is simply mocking us." Φάμελλος concluded by stating, "In Progressive Greece, there are solutions, and these solutions are for the citizens."
