In a recent impassioned address, Marios Iliopoulos, a prominent public figure, sharply criticized the pervasive issue of "fakelakia" (under-the-table payments) within the Greek medical system. Speaking at an event, Iliopoulos highlighted the ethical dilemma faced by healthcare professionals and the public. "The résumé is that today we have here the following," Iliopoulos stated, gesturing emphatically. "Firstly, we have selfless love from volunteer doctors." He contrasted this dedication with doctors who accept illicit payments. "We have doctors who uphold not just their word, but their oath," he declared, raising his hands. "Tell me, how many doctors today uphold their oath with the 'fakelakia' they take from sick people, just to see them or treat them? Shame!" Iliopoulos questioned the integrity of medical practitioners who demand these payments, suggesting they betray the trust placed in them. "I doubt if one hundred people who were here to offer their services selflessly would be 'fakelakias' (bribe-takers)," he added, emphasizing the moral imperative for doctors to provide care without expecting additional, unofficial compensation. His remarks have reignited public debate on corruption in healthcare and the importance of ethical practice.
