SYRIZA Leader Blames Government for Soaring Electricity Bills, Proposes Public DEI

Thessaloniki, Greece – Σωκράτης Φάμελλος, President of SYRIZA PS and Member of Parliament for B' Thessaloniki, today addressed the ongoing concerns regarding electricity bills, attributing their rise to the current government's policies. Speaking from an outdoor setting, Mr. Φάμελλος stated that while the recent heatwave has tested citizens' endurance, the true burden comes from escalating electricity costs. He criticized the New Democracy government, asserting they were 'too preoccupied with the theft of farmers' money at OPEKEPE' to implement measures against the energy crisis. Mr. Φάμελλος drew a contrast with the period of SYRIZA's governance from 2015 to 2019, during which he claimed electricity bills did not increase by even one euro. According to Mr. Φάμελλος, under the New Democracy administration, DEI (Public Power Corporation) was privatized, leading to a 50% increase in kilowatt-hour prices. He further highlighted that despite DEI reporting 1.8 billion euros in profits in 2024, consumers have not benefited from this. He warned of further price increases. In response, SYRIZA-PS proposes specific measures to address the issue: returning DEI to public ownership, controlling prices in the electricity market, and eliminating excessive profits. Mr. Φάμελλος concluded by stating that 'Mr. Mitsotakis neither wants nor can' address these issues, emphasizing the country's need for a different government that focuses on the many, not the few.
