A recent online video by mechanic Juan José Ebenezer of Talleres Ebenezer has shed light on a common driving habit that could be significantly shortening the lifespan of a vehicle's steering system. The video, which has garnered considerable attention, advises drivers against turning their car's steering wheel while the vehicle is completely stationary, especially when maneuvering out of a parking space. According to Ebenezer, this practice, often done for convenience, places immense and unnecessary stress on the car's steering components, including the ball joints and the hydraulic or electric power steering system. "When the vehicle is stopped, the friction between the tires and the asphalt is at its maximum," Ebenezer explains. "Turning the wheels in this state forces the steering system to overcome this high resistance, leading to increased wear and tear on critical parts." Instead, Ebenezer recommends initiating a small movement, either forward or backward, before turning the steering wheel. "Even a slight roll allows the wheels to pivot and rotate over fresh asphalt rather than dragging," he states. "This significantly reduces the effort required by the steering system, preventing premature damage and extending the life of components like the steering rack and suspension." The mechanic notes that this technique is widely taught to professional truck drivers who operate heavy vehicles, where the strain on steering components is even greater. By adopting this simple habit, everyday drivers can contribute to the longevity and reliability of their car's steering, potentially saving on costly repairs in the future.
