Canadian Expats Reveal 5 Surprising Cultural Insights About Life in Spain

Madrid, Spain – A Canadian couple residing in Spain, known as 'The Dual Citizens', recently shared their observations on five cultural aspects that surprised them about life in the country. Their insights, shared via a popular online video, highlight key differences from their home country. One notable observation was the affordability of everyday items, specifically beer. According to the couple, non-alcoholic beer can be purchased for as little as 40 cents per can in Spain, a stark contrast to prices in many other Western nations. Another significant cultural difference highlighted was the tipping etiquette. Unlike Canada, where tipping is customary, the couple noted that in Spain, there is generally no expectation or even an option to add tips when paying for services, simplifying transactions for consumers. Madrid’s public transportation system also garnered praise for its extensive hours. The couple reported that transportation operates 24 hours a day, allowing residents and visitors to travel at any time, which enhances urban mobility and nightlife. Furthermore, the inclusivity of Spanish social events, particularly concerts, was a pleasant surprise. They observed that concerts are attended by people of all ages, from teenagers to individuals in their 60s and 70s, fostering a diverse and welcoming atmosphere. Finally, Spain’s dog-friendly environment was a major point of appreciation. The couple noted that dogs are widely accepted in various public spaces, including restaurants, malls, parks, and even public transport, making it convenient for pet owners to integrate their companions into daily activities.
