While you might be thinking the culprit is a bad fall, Thompson says the harm comes from a seemingly innocuous habit.
A physical therapist, known as 'thefalldoc' online, has issued a stark warning regarding the long-term consequences of a sedentary lifestyle, particularly for older adults. In a recent video, the therapist explained that prolonged periods of sitting, often in a recliner, can lead to severe leg weakness, eventually rendering individuals unable to move independently and necessitating nursing home care. 'If you're wondering what the quickest way to end up in a nursing home is, I'll tell you what I see every week as a home care physical therapist,' he stated. 'Every single one of them has this one thing in common: they've been stuck in a recliner for years and now have legs so weak that they can't even get out of it.' He emphasized that 'sitting will slowly destroy your legs and your health if that's what your life consists of when you retire.' The therapist urged viewers, especially those retired or nearing retirement, to avoid this trap by building and maintaining a routine that keeps them physically active. This advice underscores the importance of movement and exercise in preserving mobility and independence throughout the aging process.
