Simple DIY Hack Protects Fruit Trees from Pests and Equipment Damage
Gardeners are constantly seeking innovative ways to protect their precious fruit trees from various threats, from hungry rabbits to accidental damage from lawn equipment. A recent viral video from gardener Uncle Josh Gardens, known as 'theplanttechie' online, offers a surprisingly simple yet effective solution using common black corrugated piping. In the video, Uncle Josh demonstrates how to transform standard 18-inch pieces of corrugated pipe into protective wraps for young tree trunks. By simply slicing the pipe down the middle, it can be easily bent open and fitted around the base of a tree. This DIY hack is touted for its multi-faceted benefits. "It not only protects your trees from rabbits that like to nibble the bark," explains Uncle Josh, "but it also protects it from weed eaters and other type of lawn equipment." He further notes that the pipe helps prevent sunscald by blocking direct sun, and if using a slitted variety, it can even provide aeration. Addressing concerns about potential issues, Uncle Josh clarifies, "No, it actually heats up the base of the trunk, it protects it in a lot of ways from sunscald." He advises gardeners to remove the pipe once a year to check the tree's health and to keep it on until the tree reaches approximately three years of age. This practical tip offers an accessible and affordable way for homeowners to safeguard their young orchards.
