MINSK – A recent video by statistician tiktoklana has shed light on the often-misunderstood calculation of average salaries in Minsk, Belarus, explaining why the official figure of 3600 rubles might not align with the reality for many residents. According to tiktoklana, the reported 3600 rubles is a gross salary, meaning it's before a 14% deduction, which brings the net amount to less than 3100 rubles. Furthermore, the calculation of average salaries includes non-monetary benefits provided by employers, such as meal allowances, travel expenses, accommodation, and sanatorium vouchers. While these are benefits, they are factored into the average salary, even if employees do not perceive them as direct income. The statistician also highlighted that the average salary can be significantly skewed by a small number of high earners. She illustrated this with an example: if nine employees earn 500 rubles each and one earns 5000 rubles, the average salary for the group would be 950 rubles, despite most earning much less. tiktoklana emphasized that the median salary offers a more accurate representation of earnings for the majority. In Minsk, the median salary is reported as 2483 rubles, or 2135 rubles after the 14% deduction. This figure indicates that half of the working population earns less than this amount, and half earns more, providing a clearer picture of typical earnings in the city.
