Father of Shot Protest Victim Speaks Out for First Time, Appeals for Responsible Policing

Nairobi, Kenya - John Kariuki Nyambura, the father of Bonface Mwangi Kariuki, spoke publicly today for the first time since his son was reportedly shot during recent protests. Mr. Nyambura identified his son as a 22-year-old vendor who sells masks in Nairobi's Central Business District and Mathare area. "I have raised him with great difficulty, and now I am saddened by his current condition," Mr. Nyambura stated, confirming that Bonface is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kenyatta Hospital. He recounted learning about the incident through social media and immediately contacted a doctor at Kenyatta Hospital to verify his son's status. "The doctor confirmed that my son is alive, and I can come to see him," he added, expressing relief despite being denied direct access to the ICU. Mr. Nyambura appealed to the authorities, stating, "I would ask that these officers doing these things stop, because they are shooting innocent people, people who are trying to make a living." He emphasized the need for police to conduct their duties responsibly. The incident highlights the ongoing concerns regarding civilian casualties during public demonstrations.
