Screens Down, Eyes Up: Experts Warn of Myopia Surge, Urge Preventative Measures
Global Myopia Awareness Week Highlights Growing Concern Over Nearsightedness Nairobi, Kenya – Global Myopia Awareness Week 2025 has brought renewed attention to the increasing prevalence of myopia, or nearsightedness, worldwide. In a recent segment on TV47 Kenya's Morning Cafe, experts from Baus Optical shed light on this growing concern. "Myopia is no longer just a vision problem, it’s a reflection of how our modern lifestyles and technology are reshaping our eyes and our future," stated Irene Gitonga, a senior optometrist at Baus Optical. Gitonga and her colleague, Benjamin Mutisia, emphasized the impact of increased screen time and reduced outdoor activities on children's eyesight. Mutisia explained, "The more we get new advancements in technology, the more people become sedentary." This sedentary lifestyle, coupled with prolonged near-work activities, contributes to the elongation of the eye, leading to myopia. The experts stressed the importance of preventative measures, such as encouraging outdoor time and reducing screen time for children. They also highlighted the long-term consequences of untreated myopia, which can lead to blindness. The discussion underscores the need for a global approach to address this growing public health issue. By promoting awareness and preventative measures, we can work towards a future with healthier eyes for all.
