Early Myopia Detection: Kenyan Optometrists Stress Importance of Eye Health
Global Myopia Awareness Week 2025: Early Detection Key to Preventing Vision Problems Kenya is focusing on early detection of myopia during Global Myopia Awareness Week 2025. A recent TV47 news segment highlighted the importance of addressing myopia in children as young as three or four years old. Senior Optometrist Irene Gitonga from Baus Optical emphasized that unlike some other vision issues, myopia rarely corrects itself after age eight. "Myopia is corrected by wearing glasses. People should demystify the myth that wearing glasses makes the eyes worst. It’s time to choose clarity over stigma." stated Gitonga. The segment also stressed the importance of following the "2020 rule"—keeping screens at an arm's length to reduce eye strain and prevent myopia from worsening. The report underscores the need for regular eye check-ups, particularly for children, to ensure early intervention and management of myopia. The experts' advice empowers parents and caregivers to take proactive steps to protect their children's vision.
