Miami, United States - Pop icon Shakira recently found herself embroiled in a high-stakes legal battle in a Miami court, facing a lawsuit from an 80-year-old man, David Rashidian, who accused her of fraud and breach of contract. Rashidian sought over $100 million in damages, claiming he had provided the artist with approximately $140,000, equivalent to more than 543 million Colombian pesos, to cover personal expenses and fund projects including a book and a purported 100-concert world tour. The plaintiff presented as evidence screenshots from a Facebook account titled "Shakira Personal" and text messages. In these messages, the individual impersonating Shakira allegedly referred to Rashidian as her "official husband," "love of my life," and "commercial partner."However, a pivotal moment occurred during the court hearing on October 23rd. Shakira's legal team, spearheaded by attorney José Luis Becerra, successfully demonstrated that the singer had never had any direct contact with Rashidian. The defense revealed that the entire case was built upon a sophisticated identity theft scheme. The Facebook account used to deceive Rashidian was neither official nor verified, confirming that he had been the victim of a digital scam that had spanned three years. In light of these revelations, Rashidian himself sent an email on the evening of October 22nd, formally withdrawing his complaint. Consequently, the judge promptly closed the case. Shakira's defense has indicated that they may pursue damages for the harm inflicted on her public image due to the widespread dissemination of these false accusations. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the increasing threat of cybercrime, where imposters leverage fake online profiles and websites to exploit unsuspecting individuals.
