El Alto, Bolivia - The city of El Alto has reported its first confirmed case of measles, according to officials from the Departmental Health Service (SEDES) of La Paz. The patient is identified as a 16-year-old male, whose condition is currently stable while receiving medical care at his residence. Family members who have been in close contact with the individual are under observation, though they have not yet presented any symptoms. Javier Mamani, Head of Epidemiology for SEDES La Paz, stated, "We have identified and are monitoring the case within the domicile. The patient is stable. We are not disclosing the specific area due to ethical considerations, but the Departmental Health Service possesses all necessary information regarding this adolescent." Mamani emphasized the importance of vaccination, noting that a vaccinated individual is less likely to experience severe complications that could necessitate intensive care. He also highlighted a concerning statistic: only 37% of children under five in La Paz are currently vaccinated against measles. Fátima Verduguez, Secretary of Health for GAMLP, reinforced this concern, stating, "Outbreaks are inevitable given the mobility of people from various areas. We urge parents not to be misled by false information and to visit health centers, as measles vaccines are available." Authorities are calling on parents to ensure their children receive all vaccinations included in the Expanded Program on Immunization.
