San Juan de Dios Hospital Workers Announce 48-Hour Strike Over Lack of Resources and Unpaid Dues

Santa Cruz, Bolivia – Workers at the Hospital San Juan de Dios have announced a 48-hour strike for Tuesday, June 24th, and Wednesday, June 25th, 2025, in protest of unaddressed demands and critical shortages. During the strike, only emergency services will be available, suspending all external consultations. Hospital representatives stated that the decision to strike was made due to a lack of response from authorities regarding persistent problems. Key demands include the provision of essential medical items and contracts for currently closed hospital rooms, which remain unused due to staff shortages. Workers also highlighted the non-fulfillment of internal promotions, a severe lack of medical equipment, supplies, and office materials, and the deteriorating state of the hospital's infrastructure. "The authorities need to listen to us and put their hand on their heart. They are working for the people, not for a union," stated a hospital worker, emphasizing the need for government and municipal intervention. The workers are particularly calling on the central government and the Ministry of Health to allocate the necessary funds and royalties to the Governorate, which in turn should distribute them to the third-level hospital to address its urgent needs. The strike aims to pressure authorities to provide solutions to these long-standing issues, some of which reportedly date back two to three years, including overdue payments for services rendered by the hospital.
