Bolivia Braces for Extreme Cold: SENAMHI Forecasts Frosts and Snow in Western Regions
La Paz, Bolivia – The National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (SENAMHI) has issued an alert for anticipated frosts in the Cruceño valleys and snowfalls across the western regions of Bolivia, as the country experiences a significant cold wave. Temperatures have plummeted to extreme lows, with Potosí recording -17°C and the city of El Alto reaching -7°C. According to SENAMHI representatives, while current temperatures are severe, they have not yet reached historical extremes for these regions. "Yesterday, we reached extremes of -17°C in Laguna Colorada, but our historical extreme is -29.9°C, so we are still far from that," stated a SENAMHI official. He added that El Alto is also experiencing sub-zero temperatures with frosts during the early morning hours, though still far from its historical low of -12.2°C. Snow is specifically predicted for Wednesday and Thursday in elevations above 4100 meters, particularly in the Western Cordillera. Frosts are also expected to affect the high valleys of Chuquisaca and Tarija in the morning hours. Additionally, a wind alert has been issued and will remain in effect until June 27, advising residents to take precautions against strong winds.
