LA PAZ, Bolivia – Bolivia has formally warned the Organization of American States (OAS) that its upcoming general elections, scheduled for August 17, are in jeopardy due to a significant escalation of political tensions and violence within the country. Foreign Minister Celinda Sosa delivered the alert, emphasizing that a climate of unrest threatens the peaceful and sovereign execution of the electoral process. The warning comes after weeks of heightened instability marked by widespread road blockades across various regions. These demonstrations were primarily orchestrated by supporters of former president Evo Morales, who have been demanding his re-enablement as a presidential candidate. This demand persists despite a ruling by the Plurinational Constitutional Tribunal, which declared both continuous and discontinuous re-election for more than two terms unconstitutional. The blockades have led to violent confrontations, resulting in tragic casualties, including four police officers and one civilian. In response to these events, former president Morales is now facing eight charges, which include terrorism, public instigation to commit crimes, and obstruction of electoral processes related to the organized disruptions. In light of the volatile situation, Foreign Minister Sosa has formally requested the deployment of an OAS observation mission to monitor the August elections, aiming to ensure transparency and stability during the critical electoral period.
