Cochabamba, Bolivia – Independent bakers in the city of Cochabamba have announced a significant increase in the price of a unit of bread, now selling between 60 and 70 centavos. This adjustment comes as these bakers report not receiving subsidized inputs, a benefit that allows affiliated bakers to maintain their prices at 50 centavos per unit. The price hike has sparked considerable concern among the local population, who view bread as a fundamental component of the basic food basket. Residents expressed their dismay over the rising costs of this essential product. "It's a barbarity," stated one elderly woman, adding, "I used to buy 10 Bolivianos worth of bread, now I can only buy 7 Bolivianos. It affects us, especially us older people living on our pensions; it's not enough." Another resident highlighted the broader impact, saying, "It affects everyone, especially the poor who sometimes don't even get to eat bread." The independent bakers assert that without access to subsidized flour and other raw materials, they are compelled to raise prices to cover their operational costs.
