Budapest, Hungary – Hungarian travelers are advised to exercise caution when making bank card payments abroad, particularly when presented with the option of paying in their home currency, the Hungarian Forint (HUF), or the local currency, such as the Euro (EUR). Financial experts at vg.hu highlight that while paying in Forint might seem convenient due to Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC), it often results in higher costs for the consumer. Dynamic Currency Conversion, a service offered by some payment terminals, allows travelers to see the transaction amount in their home currency immediately. However, this convenience comes at a price. According to vg.hu, the exchange rates offered through DCC are frequently less favorable than those applied by the cardholder's own bank. Additionally, hidden fees can be embedded within the DCC service, leading to unexpected charges. "Many travelers are unaware of these hidden costs and inadvertently pay more than necessary," stated a representative from vg.hu in their recent video. "To avoid overpaying, it is almost always more advantageous to choose to pay in the local currency of the country you are visiting." By selecting the local currency, the exchange rate applied will typically be determined by the cardholder's bank, which generally offers more competitive rates. This simple choice can help Hungarian tourists save significant amounts during their international travels.
