Garda Modernization: New Tech and Resources Unveiled in Dublin
Garda Showcase New Technology Amidst Operational Overhaul Ireland's Garda Síochána unveiled new technologies and resources at their Dublin headquarters on June 9th, 2025, highlighting a significant modernization effort. The demonstration included water cannons, a device for checking e-scooter speeds, and mobile apps that allow officers quick access to vehicle and personal information. These advancements are part of a broader review of Garda operations, the most substantial since 1922, initiated in 2018. "We are delivering on a policing service," stated Garda Commissioner Drew Harris. "People have an expectation of the professionalism of our response, and that means recording your decisions and recording your outcomes." Harris's statement underscores the force's commitment to transparency and accountability. The new mobile technology is estimated to have saved 766,000 hours of paperwork, improving efficiency and allowing officers more time for community engagement. The modernization also includes the planned rollout of body cameras across the country by year's end. Currently, 700 are being piloted in Limerick, Waterford, and Dublin. These cameras will enhance evidence gathering and act as de-escalation tools. The reforms represent a significant step forward in modernizing the Garda Síochána, improving efficiency, and enhancing its ability to serve the public.
