Vitebsk Housing Official Addresses Janitor Shortage Concerns and Salary Potential

A recent interview with the head of the Vitebsk Regional Housing and Utilities shed light on public concerns regarding the perceived absence of janitors from the city's streets. The official addressed questions about where janitors have gone and their earning potential. During the discussion, the head of the Vitebsk Regional Housing and Utilities stated, "Janitors have not disappeared. Today, in the industry, out of 15.5 thousand working people, about 800 workers are engaged in comprehensive cleaning, specifically servicing yard territories." He emphasized that this constitutes a significant workforce. Regarding the quality of work and motivation, the official acknowledged different categories of workers. "There are people who will always say, 'I have a low salary, that's why I work poorly'," he noted. However, he contrasted this with another group: "There are categories of people for whom it doesn't matter what salary you pay; they will perform quality work. They cannot do it any other way." The interview also touched upon the financial aspects of the job. The official highlighted opportunities for increased earnings, particularly during the summer. "Today, janitors also work under a piece-rate system of payment. There is an opportunity to earn, especially in the summer period, with grass cutting and so on, up to three thousand [presumably Belarusian Rubles] today on a piece-rate basis, taking into account the expanded zone and performance of increased and additional work." He conceded that it is "not easy work." This discussion provides clarity on the current state of janitorial services and the efforts being made to maintain urban cleanliness in Vitebsk.
