VITEBSK, Belarus – Residents of Vitebsk often question the annual two-week hot water shutdown. Yuri Adamovich Dyadyolo, head of the main department of housing and communal services of Vitebsk region, recently addressed these concerns, explaining the necessity of these planned outages for maintaining the city's utility infrastructure. Dyadyolo clarified that the shutdowns are crucial for preparing heating systems, including boiler houses, transit heat networks, and residential buildings, for the upcoming winter season. "It's a complex process," he stated, "requiring hydraulic testing of heat networks at specific pressures to identify weak points and eliminate any leaks. This is followed by flushing heating systems in residential buildings, checking heat meters, and adjusting regulators." He emphasized that while two weeks might seem long, it is an objective minimum period required to complete the extensive maintenance work. "We understand that citizens may not fully grasp the entire scope of these repair works," Dyadyolo noted. "However, it's better to perform thorough preparations during the summer to avoid emergency situations in winter." He also mentioned that in previous decades, hot water shutdowns sometimes lasted for a month, highlighting improvements in recent years.
