Ghana Gold Board Fights Illegal Mining with New Tech
Ghana Gold Board Tackles Illegal Mining: New Traceability System to Combat Illicit Gold Trade Ghana is taking steps to combat illegal gold mining. Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, recently revealed that the organization does not purchase illegally mined gold. However, he acknowledged the current challenge of tracing the origin of all gold received. "Ghana Gold Board as an organization doesn’t buy illegally mined gold," Gyamfi stated. The lack of a comprehensive traceability system currently hinders their ability to fully verify the source of all gold. To address this, a new technology is being implemented, with the goal of full operational capacity by September 2025. This system will allow the Gold Board to trace every gram of gold to its source, ensuring that only legally mined gold enters the market. This initiative is a significant step towards responsible mining practices and combating the illicit trade in gold, promoting economic transparency and sustainability in Ghana's gold sector.
