Budapest, Hungary – As temperatures soar, a recent interview with a dog trainer from WMN Magazin highlights critical measures to protect dogs from heatstroke. The experts emphasized that dogs are highly susceptible to overheating, especially during intense heatwaves.Key advice includes avoiding walks between 11 AM and 5 PM when temperatures are highest. Pet owners are strongly cautioned against walking dogs on hot asphalt or concrete, as these surfaces can burn paw pads and significantly raise a dog's body temperature, as dogs primarily release heat through their paw pads and panting.Owners should always carry water for their dogs during walks, even in cooler parts of the day. Recognizing the signs of heatstroke is crucial: excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, trembling, disorientation, and even loss of consciousness. If a dog exhibits these symptoms, owners should immediately move them to a cool, shaded area, apply cool (not ice-cold) wet cloths to their paws and belly, and offer small amounts of water. Prompt veterinary attention is essential, even if the dog appears to recover, as internal damage may not be immediately apparent. The normal body temperature for a dog is around 39°C, and anything above 39.5°C indicates fever, while higher temperatures can quickly lead to life-threatening heatstroke. The video also stressed never leaving dogs unattended in cars, even for short periods or in the shade, as car interiors can rapidly become deadly.
