Athens, Greece - Member of Parliament Zoe Konstantopoulou has brought forth serious allegations against Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister, George Mylonakis, concerning an alleged phone tapping scandal. Speaking to the public, Konstantopoulou announced the submission of an urgent parliamentary question to Mylonakis, demanding transparency regarding his alleged involvement. According to Konstantopoulou, Mylonakis, a close aide to the Prime Minister, has possessed knowledge since June 2024 of wiretapped conversations involving Members of Parliament and former Deputy Ministers from the ruling New Democracy party. These conversations are reportedly connected to the ongoing OPEKEPE scandal. "This individual allegedly knew the content of telephone wiretaps, conversations of New Democracy MPs and subsequent Deputy Ministers, which are related to the OPEKEPE scandal," Konstantopoulou stated, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. The MP further claimed that Mylonakis used this sensitive information to influence political appointments, specifically to prevent certain individuals from becoming ministers. The allegations suggest that these actions constitute "punishable acts, serious felonies, and misdemeanors." Konstantopoulou highlighted that the alleged facts have been corroborated by former Deputy Minister Boukoros. She publicly challenged Mylonakis to explain how he came into possession of such wiretap material, whether the monitoring was limited to government MPs or also included European prosecutors conducting investigations, the number of MPs for whom he held such data, and the manner in which this information was utilized. "How did material from wiretaps end up in his hands?" she pressed, adding, "The situation is very difficult for the Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister, Mr. Mylonakis." The accusations underscore growing concerns over transparency and accountability within the government, particularly regarding the use of surveillance data in political maneuvering. The call for answers from Mylonakis is expected to intensify the political debate surrounding the OPEKEPE scandal and the broader issue of privacy.
