Some commuters in the city are sharing their concerns online after going through uncomfortable experiences with rideshare drivers.
A Toronto woman, Ciara, has publicly shared an unsettling experience with a Hopp rideshare driver, raising concerns about passenger safety and driver conduct. Ciara recounted that during her recent Hopp ride, the driver allegedly asked her a series of inappropriate personal questions, including why she doesn't have children and what she does when she desires sex. "It was a very extremely inappropriate question," Ciara stated in her video, referring to the driver's inquiries about her personal life. She explained that she felt increasingly uncomfortable during the ride, noting that she had previously exited a rideshare on a highway due to feeling unsafe. Ciara highlighted the power dynamic inherent in rideshare services: "When you are in a position of authority, whether you are a doctor, a boss at a workplace, a teacher, a driver, the person on the other side is in a more vulnerable position and it is part of your job to act appropriately." She added that even in a casual setting, such questions would be inappropriate. Upon exiting the vehicle, Ciara noted the driver seemed uncomfortable, stuttering his words. She confirmed that she reported the incident to Hopp and intends to share the driver's photo if the public deems it necessary. Ciara expressed her hope that Hopp will remove the driver, stating, "This is someone who they are not qualified to be doing this job because they cannot treat women with basic respect and decency."
