JUTIAPA, GUATEMALA – Residents of Jutiapa are grappling with the aftermath of a recent sequence of earthquakes that have left homes severely damaged and families displaced. Among those affected is Porfirio Santiago Valdez, who shared the extent of the destruction to his residence. "This is my house that received this," Valdez stated, gesturing towards the rubble and cracked walls. He explained that the seismic activity caused significant damage, including the collapse of parts of his home and the loss of essential supplies. "This maize, I had it on the shelves, and it fell to the ground," he said, referring to corn intended for planting that is now scattered and unusable. Valdez also reported a lack of basic services. "We haven't had water or food since yesterday. Look how the barrels are; the water fell out. All our belongings broke," he lamented, indicating broken water containers. Electricity has also been cut, with cables reportedly torn down. His family, including his wife and four children, were forced to spend the night outdoors. "Last night, my children stayed at the Catholic church," he added. Valdez estimates his material losses to be around 15,000 currency units and emphasized the immediate need for tarps to prevent further damage from rain. "We need tarps so we don't get wet, because look how it got inside last night with just a little rain that fell," he pleaded.
