GUATEMALA CITY – In a significant security operation, the Ministry of Interior announced the transfer of maximum leaders from the Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha gangs to the Renovation 1 maximum-security prison. The operation, which took place on the night of July 30, involved over 800 special forces agents from the Penitentiary System and the National Civil Police (PNC). Minister Francisco Jiménez confirmed the successful execution of the transfer via social media, emphasizing that the operation was "implacable, precise, and without margin for error." He stated that no injuries occurred and no shots were fired during the process, despite attempts by inmates to resist. The transferred individuals are described as ten "extremely dangerous criminals" who were previously considered "untouchable" by past administrations. According to Jiménez, these inmates are now under absolute isolation with 24-hour surveillance, stripped of all access, privileges, and the ability to direct or coordinate any activities. The minister highlighted that this complex operation required weeks of meticulous planning, intelligence gathering, logistics, training, and technical monitoring, including the use of drones and K9 units. This move is part of ongoing efforts to enhance public security for Guatemalan citizens.
