Crocodile Captured After Wandering Streets of San Benito, Petén
SAN BENITO, PETÉN – Residents of the La Ermita neighborhood in San Benito, Petén, experienced a surprising encounter when a 1.5-meter crocodile was spotted wandering through the streets. The unexpected appearance of the reptile caused alarm among locals, including children on their way to school and adults heading to work. Volunteer firefighters were immediately alerted and responded swiftly to the scene. The video footage shows three rescuers working to capture the crocodile, which was found near the gate of a residence. The animal reportedly attempted to attack during the capture efforts. After several minutes, the rescuers successfully secured the reptile using ropes. Following its capture, the crocodile was transported to the fire station for temporary safekeeping. According to official statements, the animal will subsequently be handed over to ARCAS, an organization dedicated to the care and conservation of wild fauna. Authorities suggest that the crocodile likely emerged from Lake Petén Itzá, located just a few meters from the area. However, some residents speculate it might have come from a nearby stream.
