Minsk, Belarus – Today marks four years since the detention of prominent Belarusian human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Ales Bialiatski, along with his colleagues Valentin Stefanovich and Vladimir Labkovich. Bialiatski, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022 for his work with the Viasna Human Rights Center, was subsequently sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges related to his human rights activities. During his trial, Bialiatski maintained his innocence and used his final statement to call for dialogue and national reconciliation within Belarus. However, authorities have reportedly remained unresponsive to his appeals. Concerns for Bialiatski's well-being have grown, with reports emerging last year that his health is deteriorating. Furthermore, his colleagues have stated that he is being denied essential medication. They emphasize that his situation is critical, asserting that he not only needs to be freed but 'needs to be saved'.
