Brest, Belarus – A recent video featuring a local expert has shed light on a common consumer query: the precise difference between juice and nectar. The explanation, aimed at clarifying long-standing misconceptions, highlights key distinctions in their composition. According to the expert, true juice is characterized by its 100% natural origin, derived directly from fruits, berries, or vegetables without any added sugar. "The very definition of juice implies that no sugar is added," she stated. "It must be a 100% juice obtained from fruits, berries, or vegetables, meaning without added sugar." In contrast, nectar is defined by the inclusion of sugar syrup. "If sugar syrup is added to a product, puree, or juice, then that product is called nectar," the expert clarified. She further explained that a small amount of sugar, up to 1.5%, may be present in some juices, such as tomato juice with salt and sugar, but this must be clearly indicated on the label. The expert also noted a significant shift in labeling regulations in Belarus. Prior to 2011, many products now categorized as nectars were simply labeled as juices. This changed when Belarusian laws were harmonized with European Union regulations, leading to a clearer distinction between the two beverage types. This clarification aims to help consumers make more informed choices about their purchases.
