Belgrade, Serbia – A New Zealander living in Serbia, known online as kiwigirlabroad, recently shared a surprising cultural encounter in a Belgrade bar that highlighted a distinct difference in social etiquette compared to Western countries. The incident, which took place in a bar with a single, unisex restroom, involved several Serbian men queuing for the facilities. According to the vlogger, as she joined the queue, the men ahead of her collectively gestured for her to proceed before them. “I was shocked, I was definitely shocked,” she recounted in her video, expressing her surprise at this act of chivalry. “I was like, ‘What, me? I can go before you?’ But you guys have been waiting for I don’t know how long.” She noted that in her experience growing up in a Western country, such special treatment for women is not the norm. This interaction left a lasting impression on her, leading her to describe Serbian men as “elite” and “true gentlemen” for their apparent appreciation and respect for women. The video has sparked discussion online about cultural norms and gender dynamics in different parts of the world.
