MINSK, Belarus – The UMI restaurant in Minsk has introduced a new policy imposing fines on diners who leave more than 300 grams of uneaten food. The measure aims to combat food waste at its all-you-can-eat establishment. Under the new rules, guests will incur a charge for excess uneaten food. For lunch, from 12:00 to 15:30, the fee is 35 Belarusian rubles per 300 grams of leftover food. During dinner hours, from 17:30 to 22:00, the charge increases to 49 Belarusian rubles per 300 grams. The restaurant operates on a 'take as much as you can eat' principle, allowing patrons to select raw ingredients, including various meats, seafood, and vegetables, which are then prepared by chefs. Guests are encouraged to take small portions and return for more if still hungry, rather than overfilling their plates initially. Public reaction to the new policy has been mixed. While some commend the initiative as a necessary step to promote mindful eating and reduce waste, others have raised concerns regarding the legality of such fines and potential issues with food quality, citing instances where dishes were reportedly unappetizing or incorrect.
