Greece Launches Unified 24-Hour Health Service Number 1566
Athens, Greece – Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced today the launch of a new unified, free 24-hour national health service number, 1566. This initiative aims to streamline access to healthcare services across Greece by replacing more than 100 existing disparate telephone lines. Speaking from his office, Mr. Mitsotakis explained that the 1566 line will serve as a central point of contact for a wide range of health-related inquiries. "From today, for all health matters, we have only one number, 1566," he stated. The new service will facilitate appointments at hospitals, primary healthcare consultations, diagnostic tests, information on high-cost medications, pharmacy details, and will also handle general questions and complaints from citizens. The Prime Minister emphasized that this new number is designed to significantly improve the efficiency of health service delivery and enhance the daily lives of citizens. He clarified that while 1566 will cover general health services, the existing emergency number, 166, operated by EKAV (National Centre for Emergency Care), will remain in effect for all urgent medical incidents. "What does not change is 166. For all urgent incidents, continue to call 166, the EKAV number," Mitsotakis affirmed.
