Madrid, Spain – The Spanish Council of Ministers has officially approved the remuneration of two weeks of the eight-week parental leave, a measure resulting from an agreement between the Socialist Party (PSOE) and Sumar. This decision, announced today, will be applied retroactively from August 2024, benefiting parents with children up to eight years of age. Legal expert Lawtips explained the implications of this new policy in a recent video, noting that parents who have already utilized their leave since August 2024 may be eligible to claim payment for two of those weeks. For those who have not yet taken their full leave, the expert advises utilizing the two remunerated weeks now and awaiting future legislative updates for the remaining six weeks to also become paid. This move aims to align Spain's parental leave policy with European Union directives, addressing previous delays in implementation.
