Przewalski's Horses Return to Kazakhstan: A Conservation Success Story
A new group of Przewalski's horses, transported from Europe, has arrived at the Arkalyk airport in the Kostanay region of Kazakhstan. This is the second stage of the ambitious project, "The Return of Wild Horses", aimed at restoring the population of this endangered species in its natural habitat. The horses, transported in special containers on military aircraft from the Czech Republic and Hungary, arrived on June 3rd and were transferred to the Altyn Dala nature reserve. "For us, as the leading body for biodiversity conservation in Kazakhstan, it's a great honor to lead such an important stage in restoring our nature," stated Chairman of the Committee on Forestry and Wildlife of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, Daniyar Turgambaev. Miroslav Bobek, director of the Prague Zoo, added, "In cooperation with the Czech army, the Prague Zoo has organized the transportation of Przewalski's horses from Central Europe to Kazakhstan for the second time. Animals from European zoos will form the basis for creating a local population in the wild." The project aims to introduce about 40-45 horses by 2029, sufficient for breeding and forming a stable population. The successful adaptation of the first group of horses, which arrived in June 2024, bodes well for the future of the project. The sight of these magnificent animals settling into their new home is a testament to international cooperation and commitment to wildlife conservation.
