Madrid, Spain – The Spanish National Police has issued a public service announcement to clarify a common misconception regarding messages received by citizens about the expiration of their DNI (National Identity Document) certificates. A female officer from the Policía Nacional explained in a recent video that these notifications refer specifically to the digital certificates embedded within the DNI, not the physical DNI card itself. "If you have received a message like this," the officer stated, referring to a displayed email notification, "it does not mean you have to renew your DNI because it has expired." She emphasized that the message indicates the expiration of the digital certificates. The police advise citizens who need to renew their digital certificates to visit any DNI update point located in expedition offices. The process is straightforward and requires only the individual's DNI and their biometric fingerprint. The officer highlighted that "having your digital certificates is completely free and will help you perform online procedures." This clarification aims to prevent confusion and ensure citizens can continue to conduct online administrative tasks securely.
