Bolivian Elections 2025: Digital ID Cards Confirmed Valid for Voting

La Paz, Bolivia – As the August 17, 2025, general elections approach, the question of valid identification for voting has been clarified by electoral authorities. According to Article 46 of the General Elections 2025 Regulation, issued on January 11, 2023, citizens will have multiple options to present their identification at polling stations. The primary document for casting a vote remains a valid physical identity card. However, the regulation also addresses specific circumstances for expired documents. In exceptional cases, an identity card that has expired up to one year prior to the election date will still be accepted. Furthermore, in a significant update, the regulation explicitly states that citizens will be permitted to present their identity card in either physical or digital format to verify their identity. This provision aims to facilitate the voting process for a wider range of citizens, acknowledging the increasing use of digital identification. This ensures that voters can utilize their digital ID on election day, provided it is presented in accordance with the established regulations.
