Bolivia has been ranked as the second most corrupt country in the world, according to the 2024 Rule of Law Index by the World Justice Project. The report places Bolivia just above the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 'Absence of Corruption' factor, with a score of 0.23 points.
The index, which evaluates eight dimensions of the rule of law across 142 countries, reveals a concerning decline for Bolivia, which has seen a continuous decrease in its score from 0.41 in 2015 to 0.24 in 2024. The judicial power is identified as the worst-rated subfactor, ranking 140th, followed by the police and military at 137th, the executive at 131st, and the legislative at 120th.
Political figures have reacted to the report, with one stating, 'We are unfortunately governed by an organized mafia,' and another adding, 'Corruption has run rampant in our country.' They emphasized that this high level of corruption deters foreign investment, damages Bolivia's international image, and erodes public confidence.
Authorities are urged to analyze these findings and implement concrete actions to address the pervasive corruption across all levels of the state.
