Bolivia's transport sector is facing an unprecedented crisis due to a severe diesel shortage, threatening the movement of essential goods and public transportation across the country. Representatives from the transport sector in Santa Cruz have issued an urgent call for government intervention, warning of dire economic consequences. According to a spokesperson, approximately 70% of transport units are currently idled, awaiting fuel at service stations, some for as long as three to four days. "The issue of fuel for heavy transport has us very worried," stated the representative. "A colleague recently passed away while waiting to load fuel, a transporter, a father of a family." He emphasized the crippling effect on the industry, stating, "Transport is practically broken. In Cochabamba, transport is not working; in Santa Cruz, it's the same. A serious economic problem is coming for the country." The shortage is jeopardizing the distribution of agricultural products and the continuity of public transport services. "We will not be able to transport the cargo generated by agriculture; we will not be able to export; we will not be able to do anything if the government does not take the necessary measures," he added. The transport sector is urging the government to implement immediate solutions to alleviate the fuel scarcity and prevent a broader economic collapse.
