Bolivia Faces Fuel Crisis as President Arce Cites Lack of Dollars La Paz, Bolivia – President Luis Arce has reiterated that the Bolivian government cannot guarantee the supply of fuel, attributing the shortage to a lack of foreign currency stemming from unapproved external credits. This announcement comes amidst growing frustration among citizens and transport workers who are experiencing severe delays in obtaining gasoline and diesel. Across the country, particularly in areas like El Alto, long queues of vehicles, including large trucks and passenger buses, have become a common sight at service stations. Drivers report waiting for up to three days and nights to refuel their vehicles. One driver, Carlos Mamani, expressed his exasperation, stating, "It's total chaos. The queues continue as always, and it's getting worse. There are tremendous queues, days and nights we have to wait in line to get fuel." He added that the situation is severely impacting their livelihoods and ability to cover family expenses. President Arce emphasized that the responsibility for the fuel supply issue does not solely rest with the executive, pointing to the legislative assembly's failure to approve necessary credits. "We have timely requested several credits that have never been fulfilled," Arce stated, adding that political parties and the legislative body had committed to approving credits but then rejected them. "That's how we are. Therefore, we cannot guarantee it." The ongoing fuel scarcity poses significant economic challenges for the transport sector and the broader population, with no immediate resolution in sight.
