Spanish Lawyer Clarifies Legality of Dog Cages Under New Animal Welfare Law

Madrid, Spain – A recent video by Spanish lawyer Xavi Abat, known as @elabogadodetiktok, has shed light on the legalities surrounding the use of dog cages in Spain, sparking considerable discussion among pet owners. Abat clarified that while keeping a dog in a cage within the home is not inherently illegal under Spain's Animal Welfare Law, strict conditions apply to ensure the animal's well-being. According to Abat, dogs cannot be left unsupervised in a cage for more than 24 consecutive hours. Furthermore, the cage must provide adequate space, proper ventilation, and continuous access to food and water. Failure to meet these requirements can lead to significant legal consequences. Penalties for non-compliance vary depending on the severity of the infraction. Minor infringements, such as not providing minimal care, can result in fines ranging from 500 to 10,000 euros. More serious offenses, where the animal suffers physical or psychological harm, carry fines between 10,001 and 50,000 euros. In cases of severe injury or the death of the animal due to neglect, the perpetrator could face criminal charges, including imprisonment and disqualification from owning animals. Abat emphasized that while cages can be used responsibly, they should not become a permanent form of confinement, urging pet owners to prioritize their animals' welfare.
