Minsk Resident Trades Comfort for Savings: A New Approach to Homeownership Minsk, Belarus – Liza, a local entrepreneur and head of a complex hygienic research laboratory, has embarked on an unconventional path to homeownership, moving into a 6-square-meter bed space in a dormitory to dramatically cut her living expenses. Her decision, which she shares in a recent video, highlights a unique strategy for saving money in a challenging housing market. Previously, Liza paid approximately $250 (around 800 BYN) monthly for an apartment, in addition to utility costs. Now, by living in the dormitory, she pays only 63 BYN for utilities and no rent, resulting in monthly savings exceeding 800 BYN. The dormitory facilities are shared, with one shower for eight rooms, three toilets for eight rooms, and one kitchen for sixteen rooms, and internet access is limited to mobile data. Liza explains that her goal is to accumulate 50,000 BYN within three years, which she believes will enable her to secure a bank loan for her dream apartment in central Minsk. Her story prompts a broader question about the sacrifices individuals are willing to make to achieve significant financial goals.
