Mercury Scare: French Cities Ban Tuna from School Canteens Following NGO Report

French Cities Take Action on Tuna in School Canteens Amid Mercury Concerns Grenoble, along with other major French cities including Paris, Lyon, Lille, Montpellier, and Rennes, has announced the temporary removal of tuna from school canteen menus. This decision, described as a "political gesture" by a municipal councilor, comes in response to a study published last October by two NGOs, including Foodwatch, which raised significant concerns about mercury levels in canned tuna. The study, which tested 148 randomly selected canned tuna products, found that over half contained mercury at levels deemed potentially harmful to health. An expert interviewed in the report highlighted that tuna, legally, can contain significantly higher levels of mercury compared to other fish like sardines, a situation she described as having "no sanitary sense." She further explained that such high legal limits quickly lead to exceeding the theoretical risk-free mercury intake. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies mercury as one of the top ten chemicals of major public health concern. In response to these findings and the municipalities' actions, professionals in the tuna industry have defended their products. A press release from the FIAC group, representing the sector, stated that "no product placed on the market exceeds the regulatory threshold of 1 milligram per kilogram." The industry further claimed that controls over the past eight years show mercury levels in their products are, on average, three times lower than the regulatory limit. They emphasize their commitment to consumer health and adherence to current regulations. The move by these French municipalities affects over 3 million inhabitants, sparking a broader discussion on food safety in school environments and the regulation of mercury content in seafood.
