Madrid, Spain – The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has released a new guide highlighting five common mistakes that lead to increased energy consumption and higher bills when using air conditioning. With summer temperatures rising, efficient use of cooling systems is crucial for both household budgets and environmental impact. According to the OCU, a primary error is setting the air conditioner temperature too low, often at 18°C. "Lowering the temperature excessively does not cool the room faster; it only forces the unit to work harder and consume more energy," states an OCU spokesperson. They recommend setting the thermostat between 24°C and 25°C for optimal efficiency and comfort. Another critical point is the neglect of air conditioner filters. "Uncleaned filters can increase energy consumption by 5% to 15%," the OCU warns, advising annual cleaning and maintenance to ensure the system operates efficiently. Furthermore, the organization encourages the use of fans in conjunction with air conditioning. Fans are significantly more energy-efficient and can enhance the cooling effect by promoting sweat evaporation, making rooms feel cooler without overworking the AC unit. The OCU also stresses the importance of proper insulation. Keeping doors and windows closed and ensuring adequate sealing with weatherstripping can prevent cold air from escaping, thus reducing the air conditioner's workload. Lastly, consumers are advised to avoid using heat-generating appliances such as ovens, irons, or washing machines simultaneously with the air conditioner, especially during peak heat hours, as these appliances introduce additional heat into the home, forcing the AC to consume more energy to counteract it.
