Bolivia Grapples with Extreme Cold: Temperatures Plummet, Affecting Daily Life Bolivia is currently experiencing an intense cold snap, with unusually low temperatures and widespread frost impacting several regions across the country. The severe winter conditions have led to significant challenges for residents, prompting authorities to issue warnings and advise extreme caution. In the western regions, particularly Potosí, the cold has been most acutely felt. Reports indicate that temperatures have plummeted to as low as -17°C in some areas, with heavy snowfalls covering landscapes and strong winds exacerbating the chill. The extreme conditions have not deterred military personnel, who continue to patrol borders in areas like Laguna Colorada and Tambo Quemado, despite the harsh weather. Further south, the road to Tarija has also seen a significant drop in temperatures, with mountainous zones covered in a layer of ice visible from the highway. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise extreme caution as roads are prone to freezing, increasing the risk of accidents. Even in Santa Cruz, a region typically known for warmer climates, the cold has made its presence felt. While the valleys have not yet registered frost, temperatures have already dropped to -2°C, with further decreases expected in the coming days. The sudden cold has caught many unprepared, leading to a surge in demand for winter clothing. The human impact of the cold is evident, with many citizens struggling to adapt. "I had to wake up early to get an appointment for my little one for neurology, and with this cold, we have to get up even earlier," shared one mother waiting outside a children's hospital in Santa Cruz. Another resident emphasized the necessity of working despite the cold to support their families. Street vendors, including one selling pork cracklings, continue their daily routines, highlighting the resilience of the population in the face of adverse weather. The National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (SENAMHI) has confirmed the arrival of a polar mass, indicating that the cold front will persist, bringing continued low temperatures and frost to various parts of the country.
