SANTA CRUZ, Bolivia – Winter school holidays have officially begun in Santa Cruz, coinciding with what is expected to be the coldest week of the year. The Ministry of Education advanced the start of the recess from Monday, June 30th, to Friday, July 11th, not only due to the sharp drop in temperatures but also as a preventative measure against a recent increase in measles cases in the region. Temperatures in Santa Cruz have plummeted, with reports indicating a current temperature of 11 degrees Celsius. While students will now remain at home, health authorities have issued strong recommendations to families. They urge citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and refrain from visiting crowded places to minimize the risk of measles transmission. Santa Cruz currently accounts for the highest number of measles infections in the country. Schools across the department will remain closed during this period. Authorities have not ruled out extending the winter break beyond July 11th if temperatures continue to fall in the coming days, further emphasizing the importance of public health and safety during this cold snap.
